Crystal Palace mascot
Crystal Palace urged to retire bald eagle mascot - https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/ar ... 2302r04r4o
I don't know how I missed this but Palace have had a live eagle as a mascot for a number of years
Animal rights group PETA, are rightly calling on the club to stop this practice.
It is grotesque that a live wild animal is paraded in front of spectators. It's cruel & would undoubtedly cause the eagle stress. Using this beautiful creature as entertainment is incredibly sad.
I wonder where & in what condition this eagle is kept when it is not at Selhurst Park.
Shame on Palace, I say.

What bit of its cruel to keep a wild animal in captivity for entertainment do you not understand?BiggsyMalone wrote: Wed Oct 21, 2026 4:27 pmGet a lifeVeganO wrote: Wed Oct 21, 2026 3:31 pm Crystal Palace urged to retire bald eagle mascot - https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/ar ... 2302r04r4o

You think it's ok to treat a sentient creature like this? Clearly you are seriously lacking in empathy.

I seem to recall Carlisle had a stuffed Fox on a plinth in the centre circle pre kick off.

In your opinion it’s cruel. How do you know the eagle doesn’t love it?VeganO wrote: Wed Oct 21, 2026 6:11 pmWhat bit of its cruel to keep a wild animal in captivity for entertainment do you not understand?BiggsyMalone wrote: Wed Oct 21, 2026 4:27 pmGet a lifeVeganO wrote: Wed Oct 21, 2026 3:31 pm Crystal Palace urged to retire bald eagle mascot - https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/ar ... 2302r04r4o

How have no idea about that animal’s living conditions, where it was born and how well it would do in the wild. Typical woke lefty ‘vegan’

Anyone can be dismissive of VeganO's concerns, but the Eagle deserves to be treated well.
God knows there's enough cruelty in the world as it it.
Let the poor creature live out its remaining years in as much comfort as possible.
Even if it means Palace displaying a replica bird instead.

If it's captive reared then it's not a wild animal, is it? It's more akin to a pet, albeit quite an exotic one.VeganO wrote: Wed Oct 21, 2026 6:11 pmWhat bit of its cruel to keep a wild animal in captivity for entertainment do you not understand?BiggsyMalone wrote: Wed Oct 21, 2026 4:27 pmGet a lifeVeganO wrote: Wed Oct 21, 2026 3:31 pm Crystal Palace urged to retire bald eagle mascot - https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/ar ... 2302r04r4o

Birds used for falconry are all captive bred, and reared from the egg to imprint on humans. They also tend to live longer than their wild cousins.
I don't know whether this eagle enjoys the trips to the football or not as I've never seen it. If it wasn't happy, tho, it'd be flapping about and trying to fly away.

Re: Crystal Palace mascot
People are not really dealing with the fact that this animal is being exploited, used for entertainment & is undoubtedly stressed.whether captive bred or not.
Why is it ok to use animals in this way?
I wanted to comment on Biggsy's description of me as a woke lefty vegan. He doesn't seem to understand that the term woke is not actually an insult but is used to describe awareness of injustice which is clearly a good thing. It has been misused by right wing commentators to rubbish their opponents & is frequently used by far right individuals on social media as an insult.
So Biggsy, I'd be worried if I were you about behaving like far right keyboard warriors. I also want to thank you for describing me as woke because unfortunately for you it is actually a compliment & I'm delighted to be a lefty vegan so thanks again.

Re: Crystal Palace mascot
Taking the logical next step, if humans were bred in captivity, as long as it was from conception to birth, it would be OK to keep them as a pet?StillSpike wrote: Thu Oct 22, 2026 8:14 amIf it's captive reared then it's not a wild animal, is it? 1. Does this mean it's not okay to keep any living being as a pet?
2. If, as your question implies, it's not okay to keep a human as a pet, don't you think it's a bit late to be bringing me this information now?

Re: Crystal Palace mascot
Some vegans would disagree but personally, no, I don't think it's wrong to have a pet. But I also disagree with Spike's assertion that just because something is bred in captivity, that makes it OK to assume it should be a pet, or made to do things that it wouldn't do in the wild.

Re: Crystal Palace mascot
Since we are talking about the mistreatment of birds.
Walking along the Rob Roy Way (all 79.3 miles completed) recently, I was struck by the number of pheasants there were in the stretch from Killin to Pitlochry.
I did some research, and it appears they are not native birds but are bred in captivity with less welfare protection than chickens.
Over 30 million of them are released in the UK every year to be shot for "fun." Nothing much is done with the dead birds other than to bury them in large pits etc. What is wrong with people who do this?

Of course they’re not native, they were imported from Asia. You could tell from their colourings they’re not from around here originally, like your grouse or your partridge or peacock.

I’d happily be a humans pet if it meant I never had to work my whole life but still got fed, watered, housed in the warm, took on holidays and got a healthcare plan.
Blimey, I could even go out on the street naked and shout at people I didn’t like the look of. Paradise

Even in a thread re animal rights, you rubbish Palestine.
Honestly, what is the matter with you?
