Despite the neutral stance, the Irish government quietly leaned toward assisting Britain and the Allies in practice:Weather Reports: Irish coast watchers and meteorological services supplied crucial Atlantic weather reports to the Allies. Famously, a delayed weather report from Blacksod Bay in County Mayo helped pinpoint a break in the weather, allowing the D-Day landings to proceed on June 6, 1944.Intelligence and Allied Aid: Ireland shared tracking information on German U-boats and downed Allied pilots were often repatriated or treated leniently, whereas downed German pilots were interned for the duration of the war. Tens of thousands of Irish citizens also volunteered to fight in the British armed forces.

What you must remember Sidney is Ireland had no choice but to help as a dominion state of a country that was also the Enemy of Ireland. During WW1
Westminster had promised Ireland for the Irish
If Irish People would sign up on behalf of the King.

A deal that was Renaged on, typical of the Westminster government over the centuries.
De Valera had personal experience & lived because he was a Yank & Britain was far to dependent & scared of the U.S to do anything about him During world war 2.

DeValera's retort to Churchill showed the World Ireland was ready to become a Republic & the Fallen Empire could do nothing about it !

There is a possible case for Israel to be suspended from Uefa. There is a possible argument that Ireland would be within their rights to not fulfill the fixture.

What I find hard to accept is firstly that the Irish team and players will refuse to shake hands with their Israeli counterparts. This is clearly personalising the issue, when the argument is that their issue is with the Israeli government and its actions.

I also find it difficult to accept the argument that Ireland are consistent in their actions. The Republic of Ireland Women's team seemed happy enough to play Russia, just months after their invasion and annexation of parts of Ukraine, and have played since, before Russia's suspension in 2022. They've also played countries with poor human rights records like Qatar, but will accept this is a slightly different issue.

That has no bearing on whether or not to play against Nazi Germany, which they continued to do until 1939.

Russias special operation started on february 24th 2022, 5 days after the match date of february 19th 2022. There is no record of the R.O.I mens or womens team playing since. Great effort at Lying though !

The Irish cricket team have also played against Afghanistan since the Taliban came back to power, something that England & Wales and Australia have refused to do in bilateral series.

The persecution of many groups was very clear in Nazi Germany in 1936, and even more clear in 1939 when they had also invaded and annexed neighbouring countries. Ireland played Nazi Germany in Bremen in 1939.

As did England in the euros 2016

Remember the one where the Russian Hooligans Savagely stabbed English people all over France ?

I will however not be apologising as the last Fixture between as The womens team played 2 world cup qualifiers both of which were in 2015 1 whole year before Englands mens team played them in the Euros.

What has England got to do with this? The original point that you were attempting to refute was that some in Ireland seem to be taking an inconsistent approach to this fixture compared to others that they have played.

Will you apologise for calling me a liar for saying ROI played Russia in the years between 2014 and 2022? You did that twice and it is objectively true that this did happen.

MalvoliO wrote: Sat Sep 26, 2026 12:52 pm Sounds like VeganO has been secretly noshing on the pork sausages again, and is once again obsessively telling porkie pies about me.

This thread - started by the racist Qin - bashes the multi-diverse Israeli national football team (inclusive of Muslim, Christian Arab, and Druze players alongside Jewish teammates) that Qin wants to ban from the international stage.

Always challenging the "mob mentality", I often get inspired to research the shouty mob's viewpoint through a different lens (away from their pitchforks, pyres, slogans and slander), and I have pointed out how religiously diverse that Isreali football set-up actually is. No spinning, VeganO, just facts about a football set-up in a far away land.

I also compared the current Israeli national football set-up with our own four UK home nations' current footy set-up and as far as I know from a religion standpoint all of England, Northern Ireland, Wales and Scotland has a high percentage of Christian-born players and just the one Muslim-born player (the excellent Djed Spence who I am a big fan of). I guess that is to be expected seeing as we are a Christian nation.

You evidently have nothing to actually add to this football discussion started/baited by Qin, so either disprove my minimal research, VeganO, or go and nosh down another pork sausage.
My comments are directed at your general conduct on this Forum & your utter failure to condemn the behaviour of the Israeli Govt. Whether the Israeli football team is multi racial or not is irrelevant when set against the genocidal & apartheid policies of the Israeli Government. What is relevant is your disdain for non - Israeli life & your constant ignoring of the truth. That makes you a really unpleasant racist, something you accuse others of.
Can you elaborate on your knowledge of the "apartheid policies of the Israeli government", VeganO. And then please explain why the Israeli national football setup gets to seemingly bypass those policies?

Seeing as at least four different religions are represented in that Israeli footy setup team, I wonder how the apartheid segregation you shriek about is applied...

You are clearly not understanding the words that I am using so let me put this another way.

ROI were happy to play against Russia after the 2014 annexation of parts of Ukraine. So that means between the years of 2014 and 2022. AFTER the 2014 and BEFORE the 2022 full invasion.

I will give you an opportunity to apologise for the first time you claimed I was lying about this, and also the second time.
As did England in the euros 2016
https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/36450648

Since 1948 & The formation of the Republic & many in the 6 counties have been consitant in supporting the oppresed. Other than a few hundred to a couple of thousand right bigots! Why would I apolgise for something you made a mistake on ?
